16. Are colored contacts made for people who wear bifocals or for people with astigmatism?
Not any longer.
17. Should I order a few pairs of contacts at a time to have in case I lose or damage one and how long will the contacts I order last?
You’ll most likely experience loss of or damage to a contact from time to time. It’s always a good idea to have a backup set of contacts, especially true if you’re going on vacation. Unopened contacts will keep for a set period of time and have an expiration date on the box or vial past which they shouldn’t be used. Unlike other companies, including some of the big ones, all our lenses are good for at least two years and usually much longer. Ordering more than one or two lenses will also save money on postage by not having to reorder as frequently.
18. May I order colored contacts without a prescription?
No, everyone’s eyes are a different size and shape so you have to get the proper lens for your eyes. Colored contacts also need to be matched to your eye, skin and hair color, if you don’t try the lens first you won’t be sure how it will look; colored lenses are relatively expensive and it’s better to get it right then to have lenses you can’t use.
19. I am contemplating using contact lenses for the first time. Can I use the new 30-day lenses (24 hours per day for 30 days)?
Only your doctor can tell you which contact is right for you, however unless you have a medical condition which prevents you from wearing this type of lens you should have no trouble. The B&L Purevision and the Alcon Air Optix Night and Day lenses are the only lenses currently approved for 30 day continuous wear. We carry both. Please see question 1 for more info.
20. What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a common vision condition where the unequal curvature of the eye’s refractive surfaces, usually the cornea, prevents light rays from focusing clearly on the retina, resulting in blurred vision. Contact lenses designed to correct astigmatism are called “Toric” lenses.
2. Ordering & Payment
1. What is the most common mistake made when ordering?
Nine times out of ten, the MOST common mistake made when ordering is not choosing minus or plus powers correctly. As a general guideline, Minus powers typically correct nearsightedness (trouble seeing at a distance), while plus powers address farsightedness (trouble seeing up close). If you are not sure, PLEASE DO NOT GUESS; it’s best to contact us or consult your eye care professional.
Another common problem is ordering two different Base Curves (BC). In most cases, both eyes share the same BC, so if you’re uncertain, double-check your prescription. Again, if you are unsure, PLEASE DO NOT GUESS; it’s best to contact us or consult your eye care professional.
On your written prescription, power may be listed as Sphere (Sph), Base Curve as BC, and Diameter as Dia or Diam (most lenses are available in a single diameter). For toric prescriptions, you’ll see two additional parameters: Cylinder (Cyl) and Axis (Ax).
2. How do I order lenses on ContactLens.com?
Locate your contact lens brand via our search bar or by browsing categories. Then select the parameters below—matching them to your prescription or the information on your contact lens box:
Power (SPH): For instance, -2.50
Base Curve (BC): Typically one or two options (for example, 8.6). If your prescription says “median” or you’re unsure, please call or email us.
Diameter (Dia): Often just one choice
Cylinder (Cyl) & Axis (X): For toric lenses only
Add Power: For multifocal lenses (e.g., +1.25 or Low/Medium/High)
D/N: For some multifocal designs, indicating the dominant (D) or nondominant (N) eye
Choose how many boxes you need, add them to your cart, then proceed to checkout. During checkout, enter the patient’s details, billing and shipping information, and review your order. You’ll receive a confirmation email and a follow-up with tracking once your order ships. If you have any questions, please call or email us anytime.

4. Prescription & Eye Health
1. Is my Eye Doctor required to give me a copy of my contact lens prescription?
Yes, under federal law, all eye doctors in the U.S. are required to provide you with a copy of your contact lens prescription at no additional charge—even if you don’t ask for it.
Before scheduling a contact lens fitting, ask if the doctor will provide trial lenses (which they receive for free) and a copy of your prescription so you can purchase your lenses wherever you choose. If you prefer widely available brands, request Acuvue, Alcon, Bausch & Lomb, or CooperVision lenses.
Remember, you’re the customer, and the doctor should help you. If they refuse or hesitate to provide your prescription, consider finding another doctor. It’s your money—spend it wisely.
2. The Eyes Have It — Get Your Prescription
Millions of Americans wear glasses or contact lenses, and they have many choices on where to buy them—whether from an eye care provider like an optometrist or ophthalmologist, or from retailers like specialty shops, wholesale stores, mail-order services, and online sellers. Cost and convenience are key factors when deciding where to purchase.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) enforces the Contact Lens and Eyeglass Rules, ensuring that your prescription is portable, meaning you can use it to buy from any seller of your choice. The FTC recommends the following:
Get your prescription – Your eye doctor must give you a copy of your contact lens and eyeglass prescriptions at no extra charge, whether you ask for them or not. You should receive your eyeglass prescription at the end of your eye exam and your contact lens prescription when your fitting is complete (which may take more than one appointment).
Keep your prescription – Store it with your medical records to avoid delays when reordering eyewear.
Send your prescription for contacts – If buying from a seller other than your doctor, fax or email a valid copy of your prescription to speed up the process. If you provide this at the time of your order, the seller is not required to contact your doctor for verification. Remember, all contact lenses, including cosmetic ones, require a prescription.
To send us your prescription, email a scan or photo after placing your order. You’ll receive an order confirmation email—reply to it with your attachment. You can also fax it to (619) 996-4321. Once received, we’ll verify your order and confirm it by email.
3. Do I have a valid prescription and how long is it valid?
If your prescription is valid, you may order contact lenses. In most states, prescriptions are valid for one year, unless your doctor has a medical reason for a shorter period. Some prescriptions may be valid for two years if specified by your doctor.
By state law, prescriptions are valid for two years in Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, Utah, and Washington. Non-U.S. prescriptions are also valid in the U.S. for two years, provided they include the required details, such as the specific lens brand and prescription information. Prescriptions are not required for foreign orders.
For reference, a one-year supply of lenses typically includes:
- Two-week replacement lenses: 8 boxes of 6 lenses (6-pack)
- Monthly replacement lenses: 4 boxes of 6 lenses (6-pack)
If you change lenses more frequently, you may need to order more.
You can order using your prescription details from your contact lens box or individual lens packaging, as long as it includes the manufacturer (e.g., Acuvue, Alcon, CooperVision, Bausch + Lomb) and product name (e.g., Oasys, Air Optix, Biofinity).
All prescriptions must be verified before shipping, which can take up to 24 hours. Providing accurate doctor information speeds up the process. To expedite your order, email or fax a copy of your prescription at the time of purchase. If we have a valid prescription on file, we can ship immediately without additional verification.
4. What are Toric lenses and how do I order them?
Toric lenses are designed to correct astigmatism.
To order, find your contact lens brand on our website using the search bar or browsing categories. Your brand will be listed on your prescription, contact lens box, or individual packaging.
Select the required parameters:
Power (SPH): Prescription strength (e.g., -2.50).
Base Curve (BC): Fit measurement (e.g., 8.6).
Diameter (DIA): Lens size (usually pre-selected).
Cylinder (CYL): Astigmatism correction (e.g., -0.75, -1.25).
Axis (X): Orientation of astigmatism (ranges from 0 to 180 in increments of 10).
If your prescription lists “median” for BC, it typically means 8.5, 8.6, or 8.7—contact us if unsure, as the wrong fit may affect comfort.
After selecting your parameters, choose the quantity needed (e.g., 6, 30, or 90 packs) and add them to your cart. Enter your patient details, billing/shipping information, and preferred shipping method at checkout.
You’ll receive a confirmation email with tracking details once your order ships. If you need help, our customer service team is available 24/7.

5. Do you give free samples of colored or clear contact lenses?
6. My prescription says OD and OS, which is my right contact and which is my left contact?
OD refers to your right eye, and OS refers to your left eye. OU means the same prescription applies to both eyes.
From the manufacturer’s perspective, contacts are not labeled for a specific eye—they are made to match a prescription and can be worn in either eye as long as you insert them correctly. If your prescription does not specify OD or OS, the right eye is usually listed first.

15. Is my spectacle prescription the same as my contact lens prescription?
No, they are different. A spectacle prescription is for glasses, which sit away from your eyes, while a contact lens prescription is designed for lenses that sit directly on your eye. Contact prescriptions include additional parameters like base curve and diameter to ensure a proper fit and comfort. The power may also differ because contacts rest closer to the eye, affecting how they correct vision. Always use the correct prescription for ordering.
16. Do I have to pay the eye doctor to obtain my contact lens prescription?
17. Does ContactLens.com require my prescription to place an order?
No. The information provided during checkout asks for your complete and up to date prescribing eye doctor’s information. Providing a prescription is still a good idea and will ensure accuracy while also speeding up the turnaround for you to receive your contact lenses.
